Step back in time to antebellum Savannah with a visit to the 1838 Sorrel Weed House & Carriage House Museum. This beautiful and historic Greek Revival Mansion offers a variety of tours, including ghost tours, and has been featured on HGTV.
Savannah is well known for its stunning collection of historic homes and architecture, and each has its own fascinating tales to tell. The Sorrel Weed House Museum, located just off Madison Square, can certainly be counted among them.
The popular house museum is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in Savannah and, at 16,000 square feet, one of the largest houses in the city. Further, the land where the house now stands is the same where the British built their fortresses during the Siege of Savannah in 1779.
Historic visitors to the house include both General Robert E. Lee and General William T. Sherman, and the opening scene to 1994’s “Forrest Gump” was filmed from the roof. HGTV also featured the museum on their “If Walls Could Talk” show.
A Little History
Antebellum architect Charles Cluskey (1808–1871), famed for kicking off the the Greek Revival architectural style in the south, designed the Sorrel Weed House. Other notable structures credited to Cluskey include the Governor’s Mansion in Milledgeville, the main building for Oglethorpe University, and Old Medical College in Augusta.
Cluskey built the mansion for Francis Sorrel (1793–1870), a wealthy French Haitian merchant. Sorrel lived here with his family for around 20 years before selling it to Henry D. Weed (1803-1875), another wealthy businessman. The house stayed in the Weed family until 1914, then stood vacant for nearly 30 years.
The Society for the Preservation of Savannah Landmarks opened the house to the public in 1940. Today it remains open to the public, offering a variety of guided house tours throughout the year.
