NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens 2017Savannah’s Landmark Historic District contains many lush, groomed gardens tucked away behind wrought iron fences and high brick walls. Now you can explore seven of these private gardens during the Garden Club of Savannah’s annual NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens: April 21st and 22nd, 2017.

Spring is returning to Savannah and with it comes the opportunity to step back in time with a tour of some grand gardens of yesteryear. The 42nd annual NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens is a self-guided walking tour of seven private gardens and the Massie School Gardens. This event occurs every April with different private gardens selected each year. The criterion for selection being excellence of design, historical interest, and depth of beauty.

Savannah is one of “America’s Top Ten Walking Cities,” making strolling between locations on the tour part of the treat. The gardens are open from 10am to 4pm each day, so you will have plenty of time to see them all. Your ticket is good for both days but only one admittance to each garden. You will receive a map of the gardens on the tour when you collect your tickets.

Special events for this year include a Southern Tea at the Green-Meldrim House, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Sweets, savories, and delicious Southern iced tea will be served.

Other 2017 NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens special events include:

  • An exhibit of the recently acquired Green Family Furniture at the Green-Meldrim House
  • Personalized Gifts from Lettee’s in the Green-Meldrim House gardens – 10am to 4pm
  • A FREE free NOGS bookmark at E Shaver, Bookseller (326 Bull Street) – 9:30am to 5:30pm
  • Art on Foot Gallery Tour – 11am – 5pm

The Green-Meldrim House (14 West Macon Street on Madison Square) is also where you will pick up your tickets and map for the NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens. This historic home is famous for being where General Sherman stayed during the occupation of Savannah during the Civil War.

The Garden Club of Savannah was organized in March 1927, making it the oldest active garden club in Georgia. In 1975, the club introduced a Spring tour of gardens limited to the area “North of Gaston Street” – “NOGS”. In 2012 the garden tour was expanded to North of Gwinnett Street. Proceeds from the annual NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens go towards numerous projects to benefit of the local community.
